10 Keys to Relieve Pain and Inflammation

Dr. Axe: Hey guys, we’re going to talk about
the 10 keys to overcome chronic pain.
And we’re talking about conditions like neck
pain, low back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia,
tears of joints, maybe you had an injury in
the past and you’re still suffering from that
condition, maybe even herniated disc.
We’re going to cover the top ways in terms
of diet, nutrition, herbs, supplements, and
natural treatments to overcome those conditions.
Jordan: Josh, not only is pain and inflammation
such a major issue today, but the addictions
that come from pain or narcotic pain medications.
There are hundreds if not thousands of clinics
for overcoming addiction.
And we know that from being sports fans, that
different athletes will become addicted to
prescription narcotics.
This is serious, and everyone who’s watching
knows somebody who’s in pain.
It’s kind of funny, my kids now watch Facebook
Live or “Ancient Medicine Today” as part of
their home school.
So, if you’re a mom watching, you’re going
to learn great information and so are your
And so my eight-year-old daughter, Alexis,
asked, what is the topic today, and I told
her, and then my nine-year-old son, Samuel,
said, I have lots of pain in my feet.
He’s been swimming a lot, so he’s got blisters
on his feet, and he’s talking about all his
list of ailments.
But the truth is, if nine-year-old Samuel
has pain, you can imagine what other folks
are dealing with.
So, many people live in pain, we’ve experienced
it, it’s endemic.
And so we want to give you simple tips to
take the edge off, if not get to the underlying
cause, and it will span everything from body
therapies, to what you take orally, what you
put on topically, herbs, essential oils, you
name it.
This is a topic that affects every human being,
And trauma alone would cover that area.
Dr. Axe: Yeah Jordan.
I mean, if we’re looking at the statistics
and all the people around the world, we’re
talking not just millions but billions of
people that experience chronic and sometimes
debilitating pain in their life, and as you’re
saying, right now what they’re turning to
are medications and surgeries.
You know, if you look at the stats for things
like how effective back surgery is long term,
it’s less than 20%.
So, 80%-plus of people that have most surgeries,
it’s ineffective, it doesn’t help take care
of their pain.
The great news is, Jordan, today we’re going
to be sharing 10 key natural things people
can do to start to overcome chronic pain.
So Jordan, let’s jump in to number one here.
Let’s talk about high doses of omega-3 fatty
Jordan: And I should have been very clear,
high doses of concentrated fish oil is what
we’re talking about.
There was a study done a few years ago that
showed the consumption of 12,000 milligrams
of a high EPA-DHA fish oil for a period of
months, worked for rheumatoid arthritis as
effectively as the pharmaceutical, and in
combination it worked even better.
Now, we’re not talking about 1,000 milligrams
or 2,000, we’re not talking about flaxseed
oil or chia, although all of that is good.
This is high dose.
So if you’re someone who is in pain due to
autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis,
scleroderma, if you’ve got other debilitating
autoimmune conditions, mega dose fish oils
can be good.
I would recommend working with a natural health
practitioner when consuming those doses because
of the possible blood thinning effects, etc.
And in this case you can’t consume enough
fish to get there, you need a lot of cans
of sardines to get 12,000 milligrams.
And when you’re looking for omega-3 fats,
I recommend a fish oil that’s higher in EPA
when it comes to pain or brain.
So think about that.
But high dose fish oil, look it up online,
high dose fish oil treatment can be really
great for pain and brain.
Dr. Axe: Yeah, it’s huge, Jordan, as you’re
saying, omega-3s are a key factor.
And we can get these in diet as well, eating
wild caught salmon is a great thing to do,
we know macro, we know tuna, high in omega-3s.
But as Jordan was talking about, in addition
to getting those omega-3 fats from eating
wild caught fish, also supplementing with
a high quality fish oil supplement.
All right, I’ll unveil number two here, and
it’s systemic enzymes, okay?
We know enzymes actually help break down inflammatory
proteins that can be circulating in your blood
stream and throughout your body.
Jordan, I know one of the things that you
and I have both talked on and I know both
of us have used in the past are things such
as protolithic enzymes and enzymes found in
certain fruits.
I know we talked about in our last segment
of “Ancient Medicine Today”.
So, enzymes are critical when it comes to
naturally reducing inflammation.
One of the things I’d really recommend everybody
do, is follow a diet that is anti-inflammatory,
that’s going to help chronic pain.
So the diet . . . here’s an ideal diet.
If you’re saying, okay, Dr. Axe, what does
an ideal breakfast, lunch, and dinner look
like, if we’re working to reduce inflammation?
So, Jordan, what I would say is for breakfast
let’s do some fruit that’s high in enzymes.
And so it can be kiwis, it can be figs, papaya.
Those are probably some of the best there
for breakfast, and then doing some bone broth
with that.
We know the benefits of bone broth for supporting
healthy inflammation levels.
So that would be a great breakfast.
For lunch maybe it’s a big salad, you’re sprinkling
on some apple cider vinegar, a little bit
of olive oil, and then lots and lots of vegetables.
Again, you can throw pomegranates and blueberries
on there, so a big salad.
Maybe for dinner you’re doing cooked salmon,
and another side of vegetables.
But a diet that’s high in vegetables and fruits
is going to be concentrated, and these enzymes,
they’re going to help naturally reduce inflammation.
So Jordan, before we jump into step number
three here, do you want to fill us a little
bit more in on enzymes and some of the benefits
there for reducing inflammation?
Jordan: Absolutely.
Well, let me digress for a second as well.
Diet is critical, so is hydration.
We did not have enough space on this board
to list all of the tools that are available
to fight pain and inflammation.
But diet is critical.
Hydration is critical.
Starches, which were noticeably missing from
Josh’s dietary recommendations, they typically
are pro-inflammatory, and they work on a level
that is, I would say negative to those who
are dealing with chronic pain or acute pain.
So, when you are making up for the calories,
that’s where you’re going to go with more
fats, particularly monounsaturated and saturated.
But when it comes to systemic enzymes, these
are not the enzymes you take with meals, you
take these away from food.
They were developed really 50 to 70 years
ago by various physicians around the world,
and they are very effective for osteoarthritis,
rheumatoid arthritis, and they’ve been studied
against cancer as well.
So, systemic enzyme therapy is something you
may want to check out online, it can be very

Typically they’re from animal derivation,
but bromelain and papain can be systemic enzymes
as well.
And I recommend dosing up pretty high.
They’re usually small tablets, but you can
take 6 to 12 a few times a day on an empty
And again, when you’re doing anything with
the term therapy or in mega doses, even if
it’s natural, you may be best suited to work
with a natural health practitioner.
Some of the best out there are experts in
systemic enzyme therapy.
Dr. Axe: All right, let’s jump right in here.
Key number three, Jordan, I’ll let you talk
about this one to start, turmeric and curcumin.
Jordan: Absolutely.
If you want to relieve pain, turmeric, which
is the yellow-orange spice, along with one
of its key components, curcumin, in the following
You can consume turmeric spice.
You can make a tea or a decoction.
You can consume or apply topically or inhale
an essential oil, or of course you can purchase
a supplement of a turmeric or curcumin extract.
Dosage is key, there are hundreds if not thousands
of research studies and articles, and bottom
line, turmeric benefits people for so many
areas, but pain is probably first and foremost.
So, if you’re dealing with pain and inflammation,
you need to be consuming turmeric.
Juiced is great too.
If you buy fresh turmeric and you slice juices,
it can be really . . . you slice it and juice
it, add it to your green juice, turmeric juice
is powerful.
And now they’re giving it at . . . they’re
having it in shots at local health food stores
and juice bars.
Dr. Axe: Wow, absolutely incredible.
So turmeric, curcumin, so many benefits for
reducing inflammation.
And let me give one other tip here.
Actually, let me wait until we get in this
next one, because I want to talk a powerful
one-two combination here in step number four.
So, frankincense actually contains a compound
called boswellia or boswellic acid.
And we know boswellic acid actually has some
very, very powerful anti-inflammatory benefits,
and Jordan, of the clinical research, one
of the most powerful I would say benefits
of it, is for treating arthritis.
So, somebody struggling with chronic arthritis,
joint pain, and if you’re one of those people
or know anybody, maybe it’s knee pain, maybe
it’s shoulder, maybe it’s neck or low back
pain, anything to do with a joint, frankincense
or boswellic acid can help.
And so if you know anybody like that struggling
with chronic pain, help us spread the message.
But this is a great thing to do.
Now, I do want to mention, there’s actually
a difference between frankincense herb, or
the frankincense powder, and frankincense
essential oil.
They actually contain different compounds
that are beneficial in different ways, but
both of them are anti-inflammatory.
And Jordan, I know that you’ve formulated
things in the past and some great different
products over the years.
But I know that boswellia recently, this is
something and I use on a regular basis, especially
frankincense oil.
Jordan: Absolutely.
And if you are looking for a way to get boswellia,
Boswellin, boswellic acid in your diet, a
great way to do it is to find a supplement
that has both turmeric or curcumin and boswellia.
They go together very well.
Boswellia is excellent for not only arthritis
pain, but it’s been studied in ulcerative
colitis, which is super painful.
Trust me, I suffered from and conquered inflammatory
bowel disease.
The combination of turmeric or curcumin and
boswellia has been used for osteoarthritis,
bilateral knee pain specifically, but at the
right dosages can be wonderful.
Frankincense essential oil is great.
Boswellia powder is available, but it’s not
easy to make boswellia or frankincense into
a tea because it’s a resin, it’s kind of little
It almost looks like sugar cubes, something
like that.
I mean, it is very hard and dense.
So, essential oil or supplement is the best
course, find a boswellia that’s clinically
studied, and a turmeric, but there should
be loads of research online that you can find,
not just on draxe.com, but other great websites.
But the two are an amazing one-two punch that
have been very commonly used together topically
and through oral consumption.
Dr. Axe: Based on the clinical research, what
dosages are recommended typically of turmeric
and boswellia?
Jordan: Great question.
Turmeric, if you use it as a spice, I would
recommend at a minimum, 1,000 milligrams,
but likely, 3,000 milligrams.
If you make a tea or put it in juice, it’s
harder to dose, but it’s food, so it’s fine.
If you’re looking at a turmeric extract, you’re
going to want between 500 and 1,500.
But different products have different recommendations.
Boswellia now has been shown in as little
as 200 milligrams 3 times a day, to be very
effective with newer extracts that have a
better bioavailability, but you could also
consume up to 1,000.
Most products are going to have a combination
of between 500 and 1,500 milligrams of each.
Find a reputable manufacturer and do the research
There are some really good products out there,
and of course when it comes to turmeric, just
get it in your diet, have a taste for curry,
and you’ll be better for it, you will be in
less pain.
Dr. Axe: And also mentioned here, Jordan,
one of the things that I think is a great
natural treatment, if somebody is struggling
with let’s say skin pain.
You know, a lot of times . . . you know, my
father-in-law was diagnosed with psoriasis
years ago, and a lot of people with psoriasis,
even kids with eczema can start getting red,
dry, flaking skin that can be painful.
That’s skin inflammation.
You can actually take a mixture of turmeric
powder, shea butter, and we got several people
. . .
Jordan: And it’s a natural tattoo also because
when you use turmeric, you got to be very

All right guys, we’re going to jump here into
number six.
Is this GAGs, glycosaminoglycans?
Jordan: Yes.
And glycosaminoglycans, remember I said there
are a couple of different ways to relieve
There are analgesics for short-term acute
pain, or this would be chronic pain.
This is glycosaminoglycans, which are glucosamine,
chondroitin, and hyaluronic acid.
And glucosamine and chondroitin were the subject
of the wildly successful arthritis cure.
So, if you have long-term joint pain, while
some research can be a little bit inconclusive
on chondroitin and glucosamine, when you add
in hyaluronic acid, there’s reason to believe
that that’s an amazing one-two-three punch
for long-term joint support.
Hyaluronic acid in particular is great to
support the synovial fluid that helps cushion
the joint.
So, glucosamine, chondroitin, hyaluronic acid,
are all beneficial.
You get it from broth, you get it from collagen-rich
substances, joints, ligaments, tendons of
We talked about this recently, you can get
hyaluronic from eating the skin of organic
or pastured chicken.
Don’t do it with conventional, I love crispy
chickens again.
Dr. Axe: So guys, Jordan just talked about
glucosamine or glycans.
One other thing before we jump into number
seven here, which is one of my favorite topics,
I want to mention here, you know, different
conditions associated with chronic pain then
we’re going to jump right into number seven
here, if you know anybody or you personally
are struggling with fibromyalgia, neck pain,
low back pain, maybe a disc injury of some
type, potentially it’s an issue such as chronic
arthritis, maybe it’s an old sports injury
of your knee or shoulder and you still have
pain today, I want to encourage you, really
look into these natural remedies to help you.
So Jordan, let’s jump in here into number
seven, I’ll kick us off here.
Essential oils can help relieve chronic pain.
I’m going to talk about some of my favorites.
Essential oils, so we have some people mentioning
some things here.
Frankincense, one of my favorites, it’s great
for naturally reducing inflammation in the
Another favorite of mine, Jordan, is lemongrass
Lemongrass has been shown to be especially
beneficial for supporting cartilage, connective
tissue, and joints.
And so if you have joint issues, or issues
with the spine, using lemongrass is absolutely
one of the best to be using there on a regular
So a few other things here, and Jordan, actually
I’m going to ask you a question after I go
through a couple more oils here.
So, marjoram is a great oil, especially if
you’re having specifically muscle pain.
If you have any type of . . . let’s say you’re
getting a lot of cramping or muscle spasms,
maybe even something like restless leg syndrome
or tightness in the shoulders and muscle joints
with things like fibromyalgia, marjoram is
a great oil.
There’s a combination of doing lavender oil
with peppermint oil, that is fantastic for
If you struggle with headaches or migraines,
mixing . . . I just do two drops of lavender,
two drops of peppermint, and rub it right
at the base of the neck and sometimes right
on the temples for a headache.
So the temples and forehead, the base of the
neck, is so great for that reason.
And just a couple more here, we mentioned
frankincense is great for chronic pain, peppermint
is great.
Wintergreen is great and also ginger oil.
Ginger oil is very warming to the body, so
you can mix ginger oil with peppermint oil,
and that compound is great, as well as turmeric
essential oil, something a lot of people aren’t
using yet, but I think turmeric essential
oil is going to be one of the next great essential
oils there . . .
Jordan: And there’s one more, I have to interrupt.
Dr. Axe: Go ahead.
Jordan: You can get chili oil.
Now, absolutely do not put this on meat.
Which means, use a carrier.
But chili, turmeric, and then one of the cooling
wintergreen or peppermint would be the bomb
for pain.
And also when you’re looking to relieve a
headache with lavender and peppermint, drink
8 ounces of water, and repeat 10 minutes later,
don’t mix anything with it, that is a great
way to relieve a headache.
Sometimes headaches are simply caused by dehydration.
Dr. Axe: Absolutely Jordan.
So we got a question here or a comment, what
about magnesium oil for pain?
Jordan: That’s a great question.
I believe magnesium oil is amazing for long-term
chronic pain, also for muscle pain particularly,
which you’d be experiencing at night.
So, putting magnesium oil on the affected
area before bedtime is amazing for many, many
And keep this is in mind, the skin is one
of the largest eliminative organs.
It’s a two-way stream, so when you put something
on your skin, it’s going into your blood stream.
So, use healthful, organic, skin and body
care products, but remember, when you rub
something on topically, it’s going to go into
the blood stream and it’s a great delivery
vehicle, and that’s one of the reasons essential
oils can be so powerful.
Now listen, if you’re someone who is suffering
from chronic pain, acute pain, with some of
the new healthcare laws that are into effect
now, people are having to wait longer for
hip, knee, and shoulder replacements.
And everyone who has been involved, even at
the high school or collegiate level athletically,
has got something.
So if you’re watching, others are addicted
or have come off pain pill addictions, narcotic

Dr. Axe: What is the best essential oil for
tooth and gum pain?
Jordan: I think that I would go with . . . and
I use this every day, clove and peppermint.
I also love cinnamon.
In fact, if you make a mouthwash . . . but
citrus oil is great too.
So, the orange cinnamon is amazing, adding
lemon, but my go to is clove or peppermint,
but clove in particular for pain is really,
really significant.
Dr. Axe: Yeah, I totally agree with Jordan.
I’ll throw one more in there.
Myrrh essential oil, there’s actually some
studies on it, doing great, but clove is probably
the most researched.
Great point there, Jordan.
All right, a couple more questions then we’re
going to jump into our number eight here.
Someone says, what about pain when you have
a sore throat?
Jordan: That’s a great question.
There are many tips for that, and recently
I had something going on in my house.
So, I do recommend colloidal silver.
I still think the jury is out on what it does
systemically in each and every case, but I
really like gargling with colloidal silver,
and then swallowing after about 30 or 60 seconds.
So, I think colloidal silver is great.
We both love honey, particularly manuka honey
with its UMF factor.
That is a great way to help with a sore throat.
Also putting lemon in there.
And then some people make a flu buster, or
some people call it a fire cider, taking apple
cider vinegar in some water along with some
good honey, perhaps manuka, and then utilizing
herbs, the juices of herbs such as horseradish,
garlic, ginger, and onion, that’s going to
either kill the flu, cold, or sore throat,
or someone around you who is in your vicinity.
Dr. Axe: I was just thinking that.
Jordan: But do some type of a cider tonic,
an organic apple cider vinegar with honey,
with hot peppers, with horseradish, with garlic,
ginger, onion, and bam, that can bust a cold
flu or whatever is causing your sore throat.
Dr. Axe:Absolutely, Jordan.
All right, Jordan, we’re going to jump in
here into number eight.
What is your biggest recommendation for somebody
struggling with arthritis?
Jordan: If it’s osteoarthritis, I would say
there’s several things to do here.
I do think a . . . let’s call it moderate
dose of omega-3s is important, systemic enzymes
is amazing, the turmeric, frankincense, or
curcumin, boswellia compounds are really a
lot of these.
Also the glycosaminoglycans, hyaluronic acid,
glucosamine, and chondroitin, and a diet that
is low in starch, high in omega-3s, and a
good source of antioxidants.
Now, we didn’t even have the space to talk
about the antioxidants and pomegranate and
grape, etc. which can also help attack pain
more in a long-term level.
But if you’ve got arthritis, this is just
what your joints ordered.
Dr. Axe: All right, Jordan, number eight here.
Talk to us about homeopathics for treating
chronic pain or arthritis.
Jordan: Homeopathy really is a form of medicine.
If you look on the back of a homeopathic remedy,
it’ll have drug facts.
It’s a little understood science where the
principle of like cures like.
And so homeopathic is really a form of energy
And when you’re a parent, it’s one of the
safest way to treat kids.
Now, I’ve certainly see homeopathy not work,
but there’s been some amazing stories of I
would say acute conditions that are remedied
through homeopathic.
So when it comes to pain, let’s call it trauma,
the number one homeopathic is Arnica Montana.
It’s a flower, but it is so commonly used
around the world, it is very highly prescribed.
Yesterday my sweet, almost four-year-old,
Isabella, fell out of a pretty high top chair,
and she banged her head and she hurt her leg.
And so I put arnica gel on and I gave her
an arnica pellet, which we call candies, because
it’s in a base of either glucose or lactose
and it tastes really good for the kids.
When I was younger I was severely burned,
and this is a story worth sharing.
My parents were living in Georgia, my dad
was in chiropractic college, and my mom was
cooking a meal that I didn’t like.
I was two years old and I remember the meal,
mom, it’s called Spaghetti Marco Polo, it
just wasn’t good.
But I was unhappy with the meal, so I was
hanging on a cabinet that had a water distiller.
In the old days we had these water distillers,
which means the water is boiling 212-plus
I tipped it over on myself, it fell on half
of my body, scalding water, so much so that
the water was on the floor when my dad came
home from either work or clinic, it was so
hot that through his shoes it burned several
layers of skin on the soles of his feet.
So what my parents did, was they went in the
backyard, they took fresh aloe vera, covered
me with it, and gave me a homeopathic called
cantharis, wrapped me in a blue blanket, took
me to the ER.
When they took the blanket off, it was all
flesh color because of how much skin was there.
There were literally bubbles of burn like
floating in the air, and my parents tell me
that I was laughing.
I mean, going from screaming to laughing due
to the aloe vera and the cantharis.
And ultimately I was told at the ER that half
of my body was burned, and I wouldn’t grow
hair on half of my body.
And to this day, due to what my parents did
with aloe vera homeopathy, I have a scar the
size of a dime on my hip.
Now, I’m not telling you to avoid burn treatment,
but what’s great about homeopathy, what’s
great about essential oils, when trauma strikes,
do something about it, have a natural first
aid kit, homeopathy and essential oils are
two of the best, herbs are great.
While you’re taking someone to the hospital,
to urgent care, you will be able to do something
about it.
So, homeopathics are available at every health
food store.
Some people practice what is known as classical
or constitutional homeopathy.
But when you’re talking about pain, trauma,
arnica, and many others are great, whether
it’s back pain, leg pain, knee pain, head
pain, there’s a homeopathic for you and it
works great with all of these other natural
Dr. Axe: Yeah, absolutely Jordan, I love these
And one of the things I’ve encouraged people
for years, in fact I used to teach a class
in the past called, “Make Over Your Medicine
Cabinet,” because today so many people are
filling their medicine cabinets with chemicals
that cause kidney failure, liver failure,
that cause a condition called leaky gut.
Too many people are filling their medicine
cabinets with chemicals, and they’re not using
nature’s medicine as you’re talking about,
aloe vera, arnica, herbs, essential oils.
All of these different things we’re talking
about are so critical.
Jordan, let’s jump here into number nine,
Jordan: Hydrotherapy means using water for
therapy, and this might be one of my favorite
First I’m going to tell you that you need
to hydrate.
That’s a form of hydrotherapy.
Dr. Fereydoon Batmanghelidj, I’m not going
to make you repeat or spell his name, wrote,
“The Body’s Many Cries for Water.”
It’s a major work in natural health.
And he was able to cure peptic ulcer pain,
we haven’t talked a lot about stomach pain
or gut pain.
In prison, he was a prisoner of war, so to
speak, with water.
And it wasn’t even purified water.
All he did was have people drink enough water,
and in some cases he would say drink 8 ounces
of water, 10 minutes later, drink 8 ounces
of water.
But he would say, you’re not in pain, you’re
not allergic, you’re not sick, you’re just
So start by consuming enough fluids, consuming
enough water.
And then the application of ice or heat.
You know, athletes go in ice baths as soon
as they’re done with a game, and I would hate
that, but cryogenics is even getting popular.
Dr. Axe: Huge.
Jordan: So, heat therapy, so, steam, sauna.
You know what’s great and so affordable?
The old hot and cold shower.
For 12 minutes, try this, it’s cool and hot.
Get in your shower, put the water as hot as
you can handle, and try to get it on this
place in your body that hurts.
Now, don’t burn yourself, but as hot as you
can handle for one minute.
It will be hot.
Then turn it all the way to as cold as you
can handle, which is as cold as it gets.
It will be cold.
And then you alternate hot for a minute, cold
for a minute, hot for a minute, cold for a
minute for 12 minutes, so 6 cycles, and it’s
so strange, the hot becomes cold, the cold
becomes hot.
One time I went skiing, it was my first time,
and I went in the hot tub in shorts, or swim
trunks, then I jumped in the snow to make
a snow angel, then I jumped back in the hot
And it was strange because the hot became
cold, the cold became hot.
A 12-minute hot-cold shower is great.
There’s so many other old school hydrotherapy.
Something called the canape [SP] water bath.
If you live near the ocean, walking on the
sand, then walking in the water, hydrotherapy,
using water to heal some people, like colonics
or colon hydrotherapy, which is a way to help
with certain levels of gut pain.
So, there are a lot of things you can do.
Some people, you know the ice bucket challenge
went around, in the old days there were clinics
where they would take people that were really
sick and dump ice bucket over their head,
and your body is forced to react, it brings
We know ice it, heat it, that’s old hat, but
hydrotherapy can be great.
Look it up online, hydrotherapy, and see some
of the old treatments that clinics from around
the world still employ today.
Dr. Axe: Absolutely, Jordan.
And just a quick example of something you
can do as well.
You know, I know when I was younger I played
a lot of soccer, really sprained my ankle
once, like third degree sprain, and that’s
one of the things that we did, is we did hot
and cold, hot and cold with my ankle every
day for two weeks, did some other natural
treatments, and it got me back much faster
than I was supposed to.
So, it’s a great thing to do.
If you’ve got a kid that plays soccer, they
ever get a sprained ankle or a sprained wrist
or something like that, hot-cold therapy is
Jordan, let’s jump in here to number 10, our
last but not least.
And let me say this, before we get into these
many holistic treatments, as we’ve talked
about this whole show, Jordan, and the reason
why we did this is, you and I have both experienced
chronic pain in our life.
We’ve had family members, we’ve had patients
that we’ve worked with over the years, that
have struggled with chronic pain, and after
years and years of you and I treating different
people for different conditions, we found
that these things really can work and help
people live pain-free.
And whether it’s fibromyalgia, eczema-psoriasis,
migraine headaches, tension headaches, neck
pain, low back pain, herniated disc, shoulder
pain, knee pain, arthritis, any of those issues,
changing your diet using food as medicine
and natural treatments can absolutely help
So Jordan, let’s talk about here, about holistic
I’ll jump in and then have you touch on this
after this.
Some of my favorite holistic treatments for
treating chronic pain, number one is chiropractic
And chiropractic is really great in dealing
with especially issues of the spine.
If you’re struggling with chronic headaches,
neck pain, low back pain, even issues like
sciatica, you know, chiropractic is great.
Chiropractic can help increase motion in the
joint, get more fluid and nutrients there,
remove stress of different areas of the nerves
and spine, and so chiropractic care, a great
natural treatment that’s been shown through
clinical research, and especially conditions
like scoliosis.
If somebody is struggling with scoliosis,
chiropractic care is great.
I know, Jordan, I’ve benefited from acupuncture.
Acupuncture has been very beneficial for me
as well.
And then I’ll mention here just one more holistic
Actually doing things, then actually some
cutting edge research on things like PRP and
stem cell and things like that can be beneficial.
But again, chiropractic, acupuncture, and
one other thing, deep tissue massage, things
like ART, which is active release technique,
or Graston, can be very beneficial.
Now, if you have benefited with a form of
holistic treatment, maybe it’s chiropractic
or acupuncture or ART or Graston or something
I didn’t mention at all, hey, let us know
maybe something, a way that you have found
pain relief from a natural treatment.
Jordan, any other holistic treatments you
Jordan: You’ve left me with some of the more
obscure, but we have talked about this in
the past, and Josh and I have an upcoming
book that you don’t want to miss, it’s called
“Essential Oils: Ancient Medicine for the
Modern World.”
It is over 400 pages, it launches at the end
of the year.
It’s going to be a great holiday gift, so
make sure to mark that on your wish list.
We talk about several body therapies, and
one which goes along with massages, reflexology.
So this morning during my workout, I was using
certain devices to massage my feet.
So in between sets I would stand on them on
the arch, on the forefoot, on the back of
my feet.
My mom was a registered or is reflexologist,
and it’s great combined with essential oils.
So many nerve endings of your body are really
deposited in three areas, your spine, your
colon, and your feet.
So if you think about having a healthy spine,
healthy colon, and health feet, back in the
old days, Paul Bragg had a great book on foot
One of the best ways to do it is to walk on
top sand at the beach.
Just make sure to work your feet.
That is a great reliever of pain and stress.
Most massage therapists, particularly those
who are administering lymphatic massage can
do a great job with reflexology.
And that’s another, lymphatic drainage is
It’s often administered through a massage
therapist, but it’s great.
Other body therapies are . . . there are some
personal trainers out there and occupational
therapists that do some great methods, Feldenkrais,
etc., and there’s even some exercise regiments.
We know that there is good data on yoga, on
Pilates, and there is a form of exercise called
Gyrotonic that is great also for joints, ligaments,
and tendons.
So there’s so many great therapies and holistic
treatments you can do.
We talked about cryogenics which is freezing
That can be a good one.
And far-infrared sauna therapy, you could
sort of put in hydrotherapy, but far-infrared
therapy, which penetrates deep into the skin,
is clinically proven to relieve pain.
Again, the truth is we could have listed 100
keys to relieving pain and inflammation, we
only have 10 here.
But if you’re struggling with back pain, neck
pain, people have all kinds of pain from internal
organs, ulcer pain in the stomach, we can
talk about ulcer pain in the intestines.
Gut pain, autoimmune disease, people live
with pain and they suffer long-term results
of medical treatments, whether it’s surgery
or medications to treat pain.
Medications can be addictive and surgeries
can cause issues.
We’re not suggesting that you shouldn’t go
to a doctor, but why not give some of these
great first-line remedies a try?
This is really the way to go, and now you
don’t have to be powerless.
You’ll have essential oils, you’ll have homeopathics,
hydrotherapy, holistic treatments.
You and I both do holistic treatments every
I go in the sauna every morning.
You swim.
That’s another very great joint-friendly,
pain-reducing method.
And here’s one big one.
Many people suffer pain from lack of use.
So go out there and move, walk, breathe deeply.
And we didn’t mention this on the board, but
one of the greatest ways to overcome pain
is to believe that you can.
And if you love God, praying has been shown
to reduce pain.
So we could put P-R-A-Y all the way through
the middle.
Dr. Axe: And to wrap up, Jordan here, I want
to give a few tips, maybe you can give your
final tip, and just say this.
As we’ve talked about, there are millions
of people right now struggling with chronic
pain, Jordan, from headaches, migraines, low
back pain, neck pain, disc pain, arthritis,
even skin issues, psoriasis, eczema, restless
leg syndrome.
All these issues can cause chronic pain.
The problem today is that our conventional
medical system is giving drugs first and surgeries.
They’re not using natural treatments that
can help the body heal naturally without all
of the side effects.
I can tell you from working with thousands
of patients, surgeries typically the success
rate is very, very low.
So my tip for you this week is this, create
a health plan for yourself.
Take a minute watching this, and write down
what you’re going to change in your diet.
Start eating more fruits, vegetables, bone
broth, and foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids.
So go ahead and write down what you’re going
to start eating this week, write down maybe
a few supplements, maybe it’s turmeric, maybe
it’s fish oil, and then one thing you’re going
to do movement-wise this week to help overcome
chronic pain.
And after you do this for yourself, do it
for a friend, share this video with them,
or maybe even write them one tip and say,
hey, I just watched this video today, I think
this would benefit you.
Let’s be on mission together and help transform
the health of the world.
Jordan: Absolutely.
I would add spices.
Almost every spice plays some role against
Whether it’s cinnamon, whether it’s vanilla.
Certainly turmeric and ginger we’ve talked
about, chili peppers.
Add more spice to your life.
And if you think that these natural health
treatments are just for us weirdoes, look
at the sports world today.
I know almost every top athlete has either
their own chiropractor, or certainly gets
chiropractic team acupuncturist, certainly
This is mainstream, folks, because it works.
And so if you are struggling, make sure to
arm yourself with what you need to transform
your health.
And I think we amen to the bottom line here.
If you know someone who is struggling, and
if you yourself are struggling, pray.
They’ve even proven in research that people
that are prayed for, get better results.
The power of prayer reigns supreme over all
this, and some people truly need a miracle.
And essential oils, homeopathy, hydrotherapy,
and GAGs are not going to do it, you need
a miracle from God.
So, we encourage you to pray for people, get
prayed for, sign on and give us a message,
and we’ll pray for you.
But the power of prayer works.
But also I heard this this morning because
I was listening to James, faith without works
is dead.
If you’re struggling, it’s important to believe
you’re going to get better, but you’ve got
to do something about it.

  19. I have had a lot of neck and trapezoid pain and have been to the chiropracter and deep tissue massage with not much help. I just got a treatment of PEMF Pulse therapy, this was a machine for horses, and I was pain free after one treatment.   34. I was stopped at a red light on a HIGHWAY and was slammed at 55 mph from behind from a texter in a pickup in 2014 . Messed me up pretty good . I went through so many western meds and ( therapies ) that did nothing . 2 years later i had 4 treatments from a premium acupuncturist ( jody mcmannis ) in spokane WA . She worked a miracle on me and i will be forever grateful to her . Such a beautiful healer , really . I can function normally and my neck has zero pain . 3rd and washington in spokane WA .     Dr. Axe got kinda quiet there when his buddy was talking about prayer. Ummm… I KNOW that prayer works with the use of earthly medicine and wo them. My sweet husband had developed Edema in his feet & ankles. The doc, of course, gave him a diuretic med to take. It helped, but he didn't want to have to take it for life, so he announced to be one day that he had prayed to the Lord to take that Edema out his feet….and the Lord did just that. We love the spices, herbs, minerals, oils, etc. And I have gotten miraculous results from taking cayenne pepper & turmeric powder (separate times for different health issues)over the last 20 years.
